What is "DNI" and Why Is Demand Booming?

A product that has been around for decades is finding its footing in the age of AI. Demand is booming for "DNI" and this article will explain what it is, why it's beneficial to companies, and importantly, how iovox deploys this solution on behalf of its customers.

What's Old Is New Again

While AI is a big part of iovox's service offerings, call tracking has been core to the business for decades, where unique telephone numbers can be assigned to an ad campaign, billboard, radio ad, a flyer or any offline or online advertisement. When the phone rings the advertiser knows what channel drove the call and they can adjust spend toward the most cost-effective sources. That's call tracking 101.

One call tracking option is Dynamic Number Insertion, or DNI. But what exactly is DNI?

Part 1: DNI Defined

When a CEO or CMO wants every phone call tied to the exact product, service, or listing the customer was researching, DNI is the answer.

Used in digital advertising, primarily on websites, DNI changes the phone number a visitor sees based on how they arrived. One snippet of code does the work, completely invisible to the visitor.

There are two versions:

Source DNI assigns a number to each channel. Traffic from a Facebook ad sees one number, while organic Google traffic sees another. Source DNI answers "which channels drive calls?"

Session DNI assigns a number to each individual visitor session. That lets you track the journey: UTM parameters, Google Click ID, landing page, keyword, and the exact listing someone was viewing before the call.

Each location, whether it's a dealership, clinic, or branch, gets its own pool of tracking numbers. A number from that pool is assigned to each visitor session. When a visitor reveals the number on a listing, the integration serves that session's number and returns the listing details plus whatever metadata you choose to attach.

If you want to see DNI in action, here is a short video breakdown.

Part 2: Why is DNI Demand Booming?

We are seeing a surge in interest in DNI for four reasons:

  • Precision Marketing
  • AI Paired Insights
  • Virtuous Cycle of Cost Optimization
  • AI Lead Enrichment

Precision Marketing

Ask the CEOs of businesses that sell high value assets what they want from marketing data and they will not say "impressions". They want to know which specific cars and houses made the phone ring.

That is a different question from "which campaign worked," and a more valuable one. A phone call about a high value asset is the strongest intent signal, because nobody picks up the phone about a sixty thousand Euro vehicle casually. Tag those calls to a specific listing and the report becomes a demand signal.

This is why the CFO shows up to the conversation. If you can see that a particular model, price band, condition or region produces calls at a materially higher rate than the rest of your inventory, you know what to source more of. Listing level attribution turns into a buying strategy, a strategic outcome from what most people still file under tracking. It is also why requests reaching us now tend to come from the executive team rather than the digital marketing manager.

The same precision applies across locations, and it does not always tell you to spend more. One iovox customer with more than a thousand appointment based locations found phone conversion ranging from 45% to 90% by location. Nobody had seen that spread before calls were analyzed location by location, because the blended number across the estate looked perfectly healthy.

What that looks like by sector:

  • Automotive marketplaces: tag a call to the specific vehicle, the specific dealer, and the paid search keyword that produced the buyer, then look at which vehicles generate calls rather than views.
  • Property portals: connect a high intent call to the exact valuation page or listing the caller had open, and see which property types and price bands produce conversations.
  • Healthcare and veterinary groups: apply the same logic to service lines and locations, so you can see which localized campaigns are booking new patients rather than those that generate clicks.

AI Paired Insights

DNI metadata tells you how someone arrived and what they were looking at. It does not tell you what happened on the call. Pair the two and now you have a complete picture.

With session-based DNI, every call carries metadata: keyword, UTM parameters, landing page, listing, dealer. AI Insights transcribes the conversation and extracts the outcome: what the caller asked about, whether finance came up, whether a test drive or viewing was booked, and how the call went. Put those two datasets side by side and you can profile the customers who convert: where they came from, what they searched, what they were looking at, and what they said.

For a marketer that changes the question from "which channel is cheapest" to "who converts, and where do I find more of them?" Propensity to convert becomes observable in your own call data rather than assumed when building a persona.

Virtuous Cycle of Cost Optimization

Say a five-word, low-volume long-tail keyword produces converted calls at a better rate than the expensive head term. On a clicks and CPC dashboard the head term looks like the winner, but without call level conversion data you would never know otherwise.

With it, the move is obvious. Shift bid weight toward long tail terms producing conversations that close, and away from those producing traffic.

That is the cycle, and it compounds: every call feeds attribution, attribution informs bidding, and better bidding produces more of the calls worth having. It also makes budget decisions easier, because money can move away from underperforming terms based on evidence rather than competing attribution models.

AI Lead Enrichment

This one is specific to marketplaces, and it costs more money than most teams realize.

If you pass leads to advertisers, you often only get credit for a lead when the information you hand over is complete. But that lead is only as good as the phone call that created it, and the person answering the phone does not always capture what is needed. They have a perfectly good conversation, and they never ask for the email address, the timeline, or the part exchange detail. On paper that is an incomplete lead.

We close that gap in two ways. First, for US customers, we run a reverse lookup on the calling number, which resolves many cases. Where nothing comes back, we go to the conversation itself: the call is transcribed and named entity recognition extracts what the caller actually said, including their name, the email address, the location, the vehicle or property they were calling about. That gets pushed into the customer's CRM, supplementing missing or incomplete fields.

Because AI Insights analyzes every call, this runs across your whole call volume rather than only those selected for review.

One US marketplace customer measured a 34% improvement in lead enrichment using this method. Commercially, that means roughly a third more leads arrived complete enough to get credit for, from call volume they were already paying to generate.

Conversation data is sensitive, so iovox can also strip personally identifiable information from the audio and transcript. The customer sets what gets enriched and what gets removed.

Part 3: What Would This Look Like on Your Site?

Whether DNI fits your business depends on how your listing pages are built, how much simultaneous traffic each location carries, what your reveal button does today, and whether the data you would want tagged to a call is already available on the page.

That is a short conversation. Send us one live listing URL and the two or three campaigns you care most about, and we will show you what would get captured on a reveal, roughly what a number pool for your traffic looks like, and which of the four benefits above your setup is positioned to get first. Bring your developer if you have one available, because most of the questions that decide the timeline are theirs.

We will also tell you when the answer is no. Some businesses are better served by dedicated numbers, and some do not have the call volume to justify session level tracking. You will get a straight read either way. If you want to start there, book 30 minutes with an iovox specialist and come with a listing page open.
